Abstract
Deforestation in South America has had a significant impact on soil erosion, affecting its stability, fertility, and water retention capacity. Factors such as agricultural expansion, urbanization, indiscriminate logging, and illegal mining have accelerated soil degradation, altering hydrological cycles, generating sediment in water bodies, and causing biodiversity loss. This study analyzes the effects of deforestation on soil erosion in countries such as Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Chile, and proposes mitigation strategies. A systematic literature review was conducted using databases such as Scopus, Redalyc, and Google Scholar, employing keywords related to erosion and deforestation. The results show that deforestation has increased erosion across more than 180 million hectares, with socioeconomic consequences such as decreased agricultural productivity (36% in Argentina), reduced water availability (46 million tons of sediment annually in Brazil), and increased vulnerability of rural communities (40% of the territory in Colombia). The most effective strategies identified include the use of geotextiles, minimum tillage, infiltration terraces, and reforestation with native species. Additionally, the implementation of strict environmental policies and conservation programs has proven to be key in mitigating erosion and restoring degraded soils. Adopting these strategies could enhance ecosystem sustainability, reduce the vulnerability of rural communities, and contribute to the fulfillment of international commitments on conservation, climate change, and sustainable development.
