Abstract
Introduction: A health-promoting lifestyle is an important factor that influences individual health status and can prevent cardiovascular diseases and premature deaths. Objective: To evaluate the health-promoting lifestyle and associated personal factors in residents of an Andean Amazon district of Peru. Material and methods: This is an observational, cross-sectional and analytical study. 500 residents of a sector of the Nueva Cajamarca district were evaluated. Lifestyle was measured by the Lifestyle Profile Questionnaire (PEPS-I) and is classified into six dimensions (health responsibility, physical activity, nutrition, self-actualization, interpersonal support and stress management). Regarding personal factors, they were classified according to the determinants of Nola Pender’s Health Promotion Model. Frequencies and percentages were used, as well as the Chi-square test and the Student t test for the bivariate analysis and Poisson regression for the multivariate analysis. Results: 61.80% of all participants have an unhealthy lifestyle and 70.80% have unhealthy physical activity. Furthermore, the personal factors associated with a better lifestyle were: sometimes consumes alcohol (PRa: 3.87, p: 0.05), less time watching television (PRa: 0.87, p: 0.03), a higher socioeconomic stratum (PRa: 3.31, p: <0.01) and having drinking water (PRa: 1.54, p: <0.01). Conclusions: Most of the residents have an unhealthy lifestyle. On the other hand, the personal factors that were significantly associated with a better lifestyle are less alcohol consumption, less time spent watching television, a higher socioeconomic stratum, and having drinking water. Given these findings, it is recommended to create and implement improvement interventions with scientific evidence in residents with health inequalities.
