A Content Analysis of Teachers Reaction Towards the Aggressors: Some Preliminary Results

A recent report from the Peruvian government indicated that 39 315 cases of bullying incidents have been reported between 2013 and 2020. Despite that this phenomenon is considered a public health issue, it is still a major problem in Peruvian public schools. Additional factors such as poverty and lack of training in bullying management among teachers seems to be contributing factors. Previous studies have found that teachers use a variety of strategies in relation to bullying incidents and that these have positive or negative impact in aggressors’ behavior. Therefore, the present research aimed to describe and analyze how elementary Peruvian teachers react towards the aggressor in bullying incidents. To reach this goal, teachers completed open-ended questions of hypothetical physical bullying situations as well as sociodemographic items. Results showed that teachers used different strategies to handle physical bullying and that they had limited knowledge in how to approach these situations. These preliminary results are discussed in terms of research, possible practical applications for teachers and schools.
