N2 - The present study was carried out with the purpose of introducing different approaches in the use of mobile applications to enhance the user experience of tourists, based on an analysis of the scientific literature of the last 10 years. After a careful search process, 28 articles were selected from different search engines and international databases, considering as search criteria the following keywords: “tourism”, “cultural heritage”, “mobile applications”, “user experience”, “heritage” and “gamification”. The results show different approaches which can be grouped in 3 categories: gamified mobile applications for tourist destinations, tours and/or tourist guides in Virtual Reality or Augmented Reality and Geographical Information Systems in tourist destinations. As mentioned, it was concluded that exist a significant advance in the growing wave of research regarding studies that seek to promote tourist centers through mobile applications and various technological tools, highlighting immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality as the main approach of the research.
